You’ve got a message to bring to the world.

With everything you do, you show it.

With everything you are, you share it.

Your life is a declaration

written by the heart of God,

and He sees you as worthy to go on His behalf.

You are chosen, sent, entrusted with the Word.

You’re an ambassador of grace,

a carrier of hope,

a bringer of blessings wherever you are.

So go out there with heart and head held high

as one who is highly favored by the King!

TWENTY-ONE

Heard

You heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.

PSALM 31:22

The ice storm swept in while I slept, blanketing the backyard in white and consigning my car to the driveway. My husband was out of town on a business trip. “We’ll be okay,” I assured the dog as she looked up at me from a pile of blankets. The day wore on, and sleet pounded against the roof like an unwelcome visitor. I spent the following night without heat or electricity in a sleeping bag we had bought in Colorado. Back then, I thought its low-temperature rating seemed a bit excessive. But now as I curled up in it, I was thankful for every bit of insulation.

The next day brought more of the same, and as the house grew colder, my sense of fear grew stronger. When I saw that my cell phone died, my heart skipped a beat. Until then, waiting out the storm had felt like an adventure. But being cut off from the outside world made me suddenly realize the danger. I sat down on the edge of the bed and prayed. “Lord, I know You’re going to take care of me, but I’m scared. What should I do?”

At that very moment I heard a knock on the door. Concerned that her calls had gone unanswered, my dear friend Cynthia had sent her husband, Brian, to check on me. He offered to take my dog and me to their house until our power returned. With great relief, I accepted. I spent the next two days safe and warm. I shiver when I think of what those two days could have been like if someone hadn’t come to rescue me.

As I considered the timing, I realized that God had answered my prayer even before I spoke it. God had put me on Cynthia's heart that morning. Two other friends had also sounded the alarm when I couldn’t be reached. Brian was already on his way to get me when I spoke my words of fear and desperation. God not only heard my prayer but also saw my situation and knew my need even before I put it into words.

Our prayers aren’t always answered this way. Sometimes God waits long past the time when we think we should be rescued. When Lazarus became sick, Jesus waited three more days to go see him. By the time He arrived, Lazarus was gone. Martha, the sister of Lazarus, protested and said, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:21).
